Modern Day Statistics on Premarital Sex

Before looking at the statics on premarital sex, let’s consider statistics in general.

  • If we only used the statistics as our criteria for buying or not buying a product, we would have to believe that the statistics are true. However, careful examination of statistics is required before using them as the one and only criteria for purchase.

Take buying a new car for example.

  • When you look at the numbers on the web about which car is the most safe, or uses the least amount of gas per mile, the temptation is to pick the perfect car by the numbers. But how do you know the numbers are correct?
  • If the numbers on the sticker for Ford has been produced by Ford, how do you know they have not been skewed to make the numbers on Ford look better than say, Buick.?
  • In like manner, it continues to be a good thing to compare the statics on premarital sex.

For years, the prevailing belief was that previous generations were less promiscuous than present day teenagers.

Most of these statistics have come from government surveys or religious groups interested in results that proved an increase in present day premarital sex.

  • An independent group from the Guttmacher Institute, based out of New York has presented studies that disagree. According to their statistics on modern day sex without wedlock, this behavior does not represent a decline in society. Instead, this is normal behavior and has been for decades.
  • Research from this institute retrieved information from as far back as 1940. According to Lawrence Finer, the author, statistics on the increase in pre marital sexual relations have intentionally been skewed to verify the need to finance government support.
